Gas shortages

Before a hurricane on the coast, a freeze, or any panic, gas stations run dry within hours. Without power, the pumps don't work.

• Half-tank rule: don't let the tank drop below half. Fill it right away as soon as you hear of a threat.
• In a shortage: combine trips, drive gently, and don't leave the engine running unnecessarily.
• If you store gasoline: only in approved containers, in small quantities, and outside your living space. Check your lease and the complex's fire code; many prohibit it. Never inside the home or on the balcony.
• Keep in mind that in a mass evacuation, thousands of cars pass through your area and the gas runs out quickly.
