Chapter 9 · Urban survival
Home security and sheltering in place
In many emergencies (air pollution, unrest, a shooter in the area, a storm) the order is to shelter in place: stay inside until authorities say otherwise.

How to shelter at home
- Bring everyone inside, including pets. Close and lock doors and windows.
- Choose an interior room, away from windows, with water nearby (the bathroom is usually best in an apartment).
- If the danger is in the air (smoke, chemicals), turn off the air conditioning and fans, close vents, and seal gaps with towels or plastic and tape (see chapter 16).
- Stay informed by radio and through your city's or county's alert system.
- Don't go out until authorities say so.
