Week 2: days 8 to 14
Goal: sustain what you have and connect with the help that is starting to arrive. By day 14 your base water reserve (14 gal per person) and food run out: either services return, or you resupply, or you relocate temporarily.
- Contact your insurance if there is damage, even if you can't repair it yet. Take photos and video before cleaning up or throwing anything away.
- Find out about aid: distribution centers, shelters, recovery centers, and whether there's a federal disaster declaration for your county.
- Prevent illness: no floodwater on open skin; mold as soon as it appears; doubtful food in the trash. When in doubt, throw it out.
- If the blackout or water cutoff continues, go to chapter 23 (prolonged collapse): reorganize shifts, resources, and your relationship with neighbors.
- Take care of mental health: fatigue accumulates. Routine, light exercise, contact with family, and time without news (chapter 25).
Consumption rule: water, if less than a week of reserve is left and there's no restoration date, resupply is the number one task of the day; power, same as the previous week; food, supplement with distribution points; communications, 3 bulletins a day and one daily message to the out-of-state contact.
