Before you leave home

Do this only if there is time and it is safe. If the authorities say "leave now," leave now.

• Gas: shut it off only if you smell gas or the authorities ask you to. Once it is shut off, only your gas or electric company should turn it back on.
• Power: unplug electronics. Flip the main breaker off if a flood is on the way or you are told to; never touch it while standing in water.
• Water: close the main shutoff valve if you are told to or if there is a risk of broken pipes (freeze, earthquake).
• Pets: take them with you. If it is truly impossible, leave them inside in a safe room with water and food, never tied up, and tell the authorities when you reach the shelter. Doors and windows: lock them. If you live on the ground floor, close the blinds.
• Refrigerator: do not leave it open; if you are leaving for days, turn the cold setting up to maximum.
• Note: leave a note in a place visible to rescuers (without details that invite theft): who left, at what time, where they are going, and the out-of-state contact's phone number.
• Text your out-of-state contact: "We left at __:__ heading to ________."

Sample note: "We left on ___/___ at ___:___. There are ___ people and ___ pets. We are going to ____________________. Contact: ____________________."
