Signs: sweating, shaking, paleness, hunger, irritability, confusion, "drunk-like" behavior, which can lead to fainting or seizures. It happens mostly if the person took insulin and didn't eat, or after a lot of exercise or heat.

  • If the person is conscious and can swallow: give fast-acting sugar: glucose tablets according to the label, juice or regular (not diet) soda, honey, or candy. If there's no improvement in about 15 minutes, give more and call 911. Once they improve, have them eat something.
  • If they can't swallow or are unconscious: call 911, nothing by mouth, recovery position. If they have prescribed glucagon and you know how to use it, give it according to the device's instructions.
