Storing and rotating the reserve

1 min read

Heat, cans and buckets are already covered in apartment heat, buckets and Mylar and damaged cans. What this plan adds:

  • Ideally store below 21 °C (70 °F): an air-conditioned interior closet; never the balcony, garage or next to the water heater.
  • Military rations (MREs): their shelf life depends entirely on temperature: on the order of 5 years at 10 °C (50 °F), ~3 years at 27 °C (80 °F) and just 1 month at 49 °C (120 °F). A car in summer ruins them in weeks: don't keep them in the car kit.
  • High-acid cans (tomatoes, acidic fruit in syrup): 12–18 months, less than the rest.
  • Date every package with a marker the day you buy it. First in, first out.
  • Rotation by level: level 1 every 6 months (crackers, tortillas, nuts, bars); levels 2 and 3 every 12–18 months (oil, powdered milk, protein). Fold the reserve into your normal pantry and rotation takes care of itself.
  • Days you can last = total kcal at home ÷ household kcal per day (10,500 in the example). Write it on the inventory sheet.
