25.6 Grief

1 min read

You may lose a person, a pet, your home, your belongings, your routine, or your sense of security. All of that hurts, and everyone experiences it differently.

  • There is no "right" timeline for grief, and no right way to feel it.
  • Allow crying, talking, or silence. Offer company before advice.
  • Small rituals help: a prayer, a candle, writing a letter, planting something.
  • Keep up the basics: eating, sleeping, going out for a walk.
  • Seek professional help if grief keeps you from functioning for a long time, or if hopelessness or thoughts of dying appear (section 25.7).
