Chapter 4 · Fire
The three materials
| Material | What it is | Examples | Amount to prepare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tinder | Very fine, dry material that catches a spark | Dry, shredded inner bark (for example, from cedar/juniper), dry grass, dry pine needles, dryer lint, cotton with petroleum jelly, paper, birch bark strips | A big handful |
| Fine kindling | Dry twigs from the thickness of a match up to that of a pencil or a finger | Dead twigs that snap when bent, splinters, carved "feather" sticks | Two armfuls |
| Fuel | Wood the thickness of a wrist or more | Dry dead branches, split logs | More than you think: at least double what you estimate for the night |
