Chapter 4 · Fire
Choose and prepare the site
- Confirm it is allowed (see "Burn bans" below).
- Use an existing fire ring if there is one.
- Stay away at least 15 feet (4.5 m) from tents, trees, bushes, and any structure; check that there are no branches overhead.
- Clear a circle about 10 feet (3 m) in diameter down to bare dirt.
- Shield it from the wind with rocks or a mound of dirt. Do not use river rocks: they can contain water and explode when heated.
- Keep at hand a bucket of water and a shovel before lighting.
