Falls and head injuries

ER

Babies fall off beds, couches and changing tables. Most bumps are minor, but babies need to be watched more carefully.

What to do

  1. Check that the baby is breathing and responding. If the fall was from a height or the neck seems to hurt, don't move the baby and call 911.
  2. Hold something cold wrapped in cloth on the lump for a few minutes.
  3. If it's bleeding, press with a clean cloth for 10 minutes without letting go.
  4. Watch the baby closely for 24 hours. Naps are OK; if you're worried, wake the baby to check that they wake up normally.
  5. Feed as usual, in small amounts.

What not to do

  • Don't give aspirin.
  • Don't leave the baby alone on beds, couches or changing tables, not even for a second.
  • Don't use baby walkers with wheels.
  • Don't put the infant seat on tables or counters.
