Burns
ER
Hot water, coffee, soup, irons and stoves cause many burns in babies. Cool the burn with water as soon as possible.
What to do
- Move the baby away from the heat.
- Remove clothing and jewelry from the area, except anything stuck to the skin.
- Hold the burn under cool (not ice-cold) running tap water for 10 to 20 minutes.
- Keep the rest of the body covered so the baby doesn't get cold.
- Cover loosely with clean gauze or a lint-free cloth.
- Ask the pediatrician or pharmacist what to give for pain.
What not to do
- Don't use ice, butter, oil, toothpaste, egg or ointments.
- Don't pop blisters.
- Don't pull off clothing stuck to the skin.
