Nature and water
Stranded in a car in cold or snow
Ice or snow leaves you trapped on the highway.
Do this nowTap each step when done
- 1Stay in the car. Walking out in the snow kills.
- 2Call 911: highway, direction, last exit or mile marker.
- 3Check the tailpipe for snow before each time you start the engine.
- 4Run the engine and heater about 10 minutes every hour.
- 5Crack a window open on the side away from the wind.
- 6Huddle together with blankets and extra clothes. Cover your heads.
- 7Sleep in shifts: someone watches the tailpipe, gas, and rescue.
Don't
- Don't start the engine with the tailpipe blocked.
- Don't use the interior light with the engine off.
- Don't eat snow or drink alcohol.
- Don't exert yourself until you sweat.
Have ready
- Tank above half from December to February.
- Blankets for everyone, pets included.
- Hats, gloves, socks, water, and energy food.
- Bright-colored cloth, small shovel, and jumper cables.
Key factHeadache, dizziness, or drowsiness in the car: turn off the engine, open the windows, and check the tailpipe. It's carbon monoxide. Watch out for frozen bridges and overpasses on the main highways in your area.
