Each pet with a collar, tag, and leash. A carrier or collapsible crate for each one helps keep them still and safe during a tornado, and takes up little space in the core.
Absorbent pet pads (pee pads) or newspaper over plastic in a corner of the shelter: they won't be able to go outside while the fallout or the chemical cloud lasts. Get them used to the pads before the emergency.
Bags for their waste, which is handled the same way as human waste (
chapter 21
).
Pet water and food for the same length of time as for people (amounts in
chapter 2
); in hot weather they drink more.
Heat: dogs overheat quickly (excessive panting, drooling, weakness); give them a cool floor and always have water available.
Practice with them: a stressed animal in a small space can bite or escape.
