2.15 Storage in an apartment

1 min read

Little space, and maybe on the ground floor. Three rules: up high (in case water gets in), in the cool (inside the air-conditioned space), spread out (if one room is damaged, you don't lose everything).

Figure 2.3. Example of how to distribute the kit in a two-bedroom apartment.
  • Under the beds: raise the bed with furniture risers and store flat water containers and cases of cans. You gain a lot of space.
  • Closets: use the top shelf for food and documents; the closet floor only for airtight containers on a pallet or low shelf.
  • Behind couches, inside ottomans and storage benches: packs of bottles.
  • Plastic containers with airtight lids, labeled by category (WATER, FOOD, LIGHT, FIRST AID, HYGIENE, PETS), with the check date on the lid.
  • Don't use the outdoor patio closet for food, medications, water, or batteries: the heat degrades them.
  • Away from the front door and windows if your area can flood: that's where water comes in.
  • The 72-hour bags do go next to the exit, ready to grab in the dark.
