Your neighbor network

In an apartment complex, your neighbors are your first help. Firefighters and police can take hours in a large emergency.

• Know the names of your neighbors next door, upstairs, and across the way. Exchange phone numbers.
• Identify who lives alone, who is an older adult, who has babies, who depends on oxygen or other medical equipment.
• Identify skills: nurses, electricians, who speaks English and Spanish, who has tools or a generator.
• Create a building message group for emergencies.
• Agree on a signal: for example, a white cloth on the door means "we're okay"; with no cloth, someone should knock.
• Keep the after-hours emergency phone number for the management and maintenance.
• After any event, check on your vulnerable neighbors, in person.
