Gas leak

1 min read

Natural gas has no odor; the gas company adds mercaptan, which smells like rotten eggs. Other signs: a hissing or roaring sound near a pipe, dead plants, soil that is pushed up, or water bubbling in the ground.

  1. Get out immediately and leave the door open. Take people and pets, nothing else.
  2. Don't create sparks. Don't turn lights or appliances on or off, don't use a flashlight, don't use the phone near the leak, don't light matches or start the car if it's nearby, don't open the electric garage door.
  3. Move away to a safe distance, and from there call 911 and your gas company.
  4. Warn your neighbors by knocking on their doors as you leave, without using electric doorbells.
  5. Don't go back until your gas company or the fire department says it's safe. If the gas was shut off, only the company should turn it back on and relight the pilot lights.
