Chapter 20 · Tools and knife
20.9 Improvised tools
If you don't have the tool, you can sometimes make something that works. Do it only for low-demand jobs.
- Wedge: a piece of hardwood carved to a point to open a cut or secure a door.
- Lever: a metal pipe or a thick, straight pole with a fulcrum close to the load. Never get under what you are lifting; slip in blocks as it rises.
- Shovel: a metal tray, a piece of sheet metal, or a cooler lid to move dirt or sand.
- Hammer: a flat stone held in your hand, or the back of a large wrench. Don't strike with the knife or the multitool.
- Cutter: a cut edge of a can (carefully) or a piece of glass wrapped in tape on one side, only for rope or cloth.
- Rope: sheets torn into strips, cords from useless appliances. Knots are in chapter 17.
- Bucket: a cut-off water jug or a heavy trash bag inside a box.
