On entering: decontamination

  1. Take off your outer clothing before going in, if you can. According to the CDC, removing the outer layer removes up to 90% of radioactive material.
  2. Put it in a plastic bag, seal it and leave it away from people and pets.
  3. Shower with warm water, soap and shampoo. No conditioner: it binds radioactive material to hair. Don't scrub or scratch your skin.
  4. No shower: wash your hands, face and exposed skin at a sink, or wipe with a damp cloth or wipes. Blow your nose and wipe your eyelids, eyelashes and ears.
  5. Put on clean clothes that were stored inside.
  6. Pets that were outside: wash them with soap and water, wearing gloves.
