If you live inland, more than 100 miles (160 km) from the coast, you do not get storm surge, which is what kills the most people on the coast. But you do get three things: torrential rain that causes flash floods (the main inland threat), tropical-storm-force winds that bring down trees and power lines, and tornadoes that form in the rain bands. In addition, inland cities are often the main destination for coastal evacuees.
