Chapter 17 · Knots, ropes, and lashings
Basic terminology
Manuals use different words depending on the source. This guide uses the standard nautical and scouting terms:
- Standing part: the long part of the rope, the part that works or takes the load.
- Working end: the free end you tie the knot with.
- Bight: a U-shaped bend in the rope, without crossing.
- Loop: the rope turns back and crosses over itself. Round turn: goes completely around an object (one and a half turns).
- Half hitch: the working end goes around the standing part or another object and passes under itself.
- Loop (eye): a fixed loop that does not slip.
- Bend: joins two ropes. Hitch: fastens the rope to an object.
