Chapter 21 · Hygiene and sanitation
21.6 Dog waste
Your dogs produce feces every day, and their feces also transmit germs and parasites. Without trash collection, add them to the human waste system.
- Always pick up with a bag, immediately. Don't leave feces on the complex's grass: they attract flies and contaminate the ground everyone walks on.
- Tie each bag shut and store it in the same lidded container as the human waste, inside a larger bag. Don't put it in the kitchen trash.
- If they can't go outside (sheltering at home, storm, contaminated air), use absorbent dog pads in the bathroom or in a hard-floored area. Change them as soon as they're used, double-bagged into the container. Get them used to the pads before you need them.
- Don't use a litter box or the bucket toilet for them, and don't let them near the waste container or floodwater.
- Clean paws with a damp cloth if they walked through mud or floodwater; then wash your hands.
- Figure on 2 waste bags per dog per day, plus extra: for 2 weeks, at least about 30 bags per dog.
