Chapter 1 · Fundamentals
1.3 The will to live
The military manual insists that the will to survive is the factor that weighs most when everything else fails. It is not an abstract concept; it is built through actions:
- Have a concrete reason. A person, a goal, a date. Say it out loud if you need to.
- Break the problem down. Don't think "survive two weeks without power"; think "get to nightfall with water and a cool home."
- Celebrate small wins. The water is stored, everyone ate, the radio works.
- Take care of others. Having someone to protect (family, pets, an elderly neighbor) strengthens your will.
- Keep up hygiene and order. Washing up and tidying your space gives a sense of control.
