Chapter 1 · Fundamentals
1.5 Order of priorities
When something happens, follow this order. If a step doesn't apply, go to the next one. Start over each time the situation changes.
- Immediate safety. Get out of danger: fire, smoke, smell of gas, rising water, damaged structure, downed wires. Don't go back for belongings.
- Life: bleeding and breathing. Control hemorrhages, clear airways, call 911 (chapter 7).
- Protection from the weather. Heat, cold, rain. Find shade or a cool place in summer; dry layers and a small room in winter.
- Water. Secure safe water for two weeks at home (chapters 2 and 3).
- Communication and information. Let your family and your out-of-state contact know. Listen to the radio. If you are lost, signal for help (chapter 8).
- Food. Use what spoils first (refrigerator), then the freezer, and last the emergency pantry.
- Sanitation and rest. Hygiene, trash handling, and sleep shifts prevent illness and mistakes.
