Before you go: what gets you found if you get lost

The search begins when someone notices you did not come back. If no one knows where you went, no one looks for you in the right place.

• Leave your plan in writing with a trusted person: trail, starting point, return time, and the time at which they should call 911 if they have not heard from you.
• Take a photo of the trail map at the entrance and a photo of your car with the license plate visible.
• Carry the backpack kit from chapter 2: water, a waterproof layer, a headlamp, a whistle, a lighter, a first-aid kit, and an extra battery for your phone.
• Check the National Weather Service forecast (weather.gov) for the exact area, not for the nearest city.
• Work out the time of sunset and set a mandatory turnaround time, even if you have not reached your goal.
• Download the area map on your phone so you can use it without a signal (chapter 8).
