Fire in rain or humidity

  1. Find shelter for the fire: under a high tarp, a rock overhang, or dense trees (making sure branches are not close to the flame).
  2. Make a base: if the ground is wet, build a platform of dry branches or flat rocks.
  3. Look for dry wood: dead branches hanging from the tree, the underside of fallen logs, the inside of split wood. Splitting wood exposes dry wood.
  4. Carve "feather" sticks: shave thin curls without detaching them from the stick; dry curls catch easily.
  5. Double the tinder and kindling and keep it under your clothes or in a bag until the moment you use it.
  6. Dry the next wood by placing it near (not on top of) the fire.
  7. Use a solid accelerant (cotton with petroleum jelly, fuel tablets). Never spray gasoline on a fire.
