Carbon monoxide: the invisible danger

1 min read

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by any combustion: charcoal, gas, propane, gasoline, wood, kerosene. During blackouts and winter storms, many people die from using this equipment indoors. It can kill you while you sleep without you waking up.

Symptoms and what to do

Headache, dizziness, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, chest pain, and confusion. They seem like the flu; if several people or the pets feel sick at the same time in the same room, suspect CO. Pets are often affected first.

  1. Get outside into fresh air immediately with all people and pets.
  2. Call 911 from outside.
  3. Do not go back in until firefighters say it is safe.
