Chapter 12 · Desert
Dangerous wildlife
Most desert animals avoid people. Accidents happen when you put your hand where you cannot see. First aid for bites and stings is in chapter 7.
| Animal | Where | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Rattlesnakes | Under rocks, brush, in crevices; active at dusk and at night in summer | Boots and long pants. Watch where you step and where you put your hands. If you see one, back away slowly; do not try to kill it or move it. |
| Scorpions | Under stones and bark, inside shoes and clothing | Shake out boots, clothing, and sleeping bag before using them. Do not lift stones with your bare hand. |
| Centipedes, spiders (black widow, recluse) | Crevices, firewood, corners of abandoned structures | Wear gloves when gathering firewood. Check before you sit down. |
| Bees (including Africanized bees) | Near water sources, in hollows in rocks and trees | If they attack, run in a straight line toward a car or building, covering your face. Do not stand still or swat at them. |
| Cougars, black bears, wild boars | Desert ranges and mountains | Rules in chapter 11. |
