Common mistakes
- Saving water "for later" while you walk in the sun.
- Taking your shirt off because of the heat.
- Leaving the car and walking at midday to look for help.
- Camping in a dry wash because it is flat and sandy.
- Misjudging the distance to a mountain or a "lake" on the horizon.
- Going in summer to low-elevation trails because "it is a short hike."
- Carrying only the day's water, with no reserve in the car.
