16.2 Trains and trucks with hazardous materials

If you see a hazardous materials accident

• Vehicles and tank cars carry diamond-shaped placards with a four-digit number. Do not approach to read them: move away and report it to 911 with the location.
• Move away upwind and uphill. Do not walk or drive through puddles, smoke, or clouds.

• If you are in the car inside a cloud and cannot get out of it: close windows and vents, turn off the air conditioning and heating, and keep moving away if the road allows.
• Follow orders: firefighters may order an area evacuated or tell people to shelter in place depending on the chemical and the wind.
