Vomiting and diarrhea
Pediatrician
Spitting up a little milk after feeding is normal. Vomiting and diarrhea from a virus usually pass in a few days. The biggest danger is dehydration.
What to do
- Keep breastfeeding or giving formula. After vomiting, wait 15 to 30 minutes and offer small amounts again.
- If vomiting a lot, give oral rehydration solution by the teaspoon (see 'Dehydration').
- While vomiting, hold the baby on their side or sitting up in your arms. For sleep, always on the back.
- Change diapers quickly and protect the skin with zinc oxide cream.
- Wash your hands with soap and water after every diaper and clean surfaces.
What not to do
- Don't give anti-vomiting or anti-diarrhea medicine without a prescription, such as loperamide or Pepto-Bismol (it contains a relative of aspirin).
- Don't water down formula or switch milks without asking.
- Don't give juice, soda or sports drinks.
- Don't force the baby to eat.
