Rashes and diaper rash

At home
Most rashes in babies are not serious: diaper rash, newborn acne, heat rash or eczema. But some are an emergency.
The glass test
Press a clear drinking glass against the spots. If you can still see them through the glass, it's an emergency: go to the ER or call 911.
What to do
- Change the diaper as soon as it's wet or dirty.
- Clean with warm water and a soft cloth; pat dry.
- Leave the skin open to the air for a few minutes.
- Apply a thick layer of zinc oxide cream or petroleum jelly.
- For eczema: short baths in lukewarm water and a fragrance-free moisturizer.
What not to do
- Don't use talc or cornstarch powder: the baby can breathe it in.
- Don't use wipes with alcohol or fragrance on irritated skin.
- Don't use steroid or antifungal creams unless the pediatrician says so.
