Ear pain and ear infections
Pediatrician
Ear infections are common after a cold. The baby may pull at the ear, cry more when lying down, sleep poorly or have a fever.
What to do
- Call the pediatrician to have the baby checked. Not every infection needs antibiotics; sometimes the doctor waits 2 or 3 days.
- For pain: acetaminophen, or ibuprofen if 6 months or older, using the dose on the package for your baby's weight, or ask the pediatrician or pharmacist.
- A warm (not hot) cloth over the ear may help.
- If an antibiotic is prescribed, give the full course, even if the baby gets better.
What not to do
- Don't put drops, oil, garlic or remedies in the ear without a prescription.
- Don't put cotton swabs in the ear.
- Don't bottle-feed the baby lying flat or prop the bottle.
- Don't smoke near the baby: smoke increases ear infections.
