Thunderstorm and lightning
If you hear thunder, lightning can strike you. It strikes from more than 10 miles (16 km) away.
Do this nowTap each step when done
- 1At the first thunder, go inside a building with power and plumbing.
- 2Or get into an enclosed car with a metal roof and the windows up.
- 3Get out of the water and move away from the shore.
- 4Indoors: stay away from windows and exterior doors.
- 5Bring your pets inside. A doghouse doesn't protect.
- 6Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder.
- 7Someone struck: touch them without fear. 911 and CPR if they aren't breathing.
Don't
- Don't shelter under trees, tents, or open pavilions.
- Don't shower or wash dishes during the storm.
- Don't use a corded phone or touch plugged-in appliances.
Have ready
- NOAA radio with alerts.
- Plan to get out of rivers and lakes at the first thunder.
- Charged cell phone: it is safe to use.
Key factSeconds between lightning and thunder ÷ 5 = miles. It helps you see if it's approaching, not decide whether it's safe. Never lie flat on the ground.
