Nature and water
Lost in the woods or the backcountry
You don't know where you are on a trail or in the backcountry.
Do this nowTap each step when done
- 1Stop as soon as you doubt. Sit down, drink water, eat something.
- 2Think: where were you last sure of your location? Does anyone know your route?
- 3Observe: sun, hills, road or water noise. Check signal and GPS.
- 4Call 911 and say where you are first. If it won't go through, send a text.
- 5Stay in a visible clearing if someone knows your route.
- 6Prepare signals and shelter before dark.
- 7Answer voices or whistles with 3 whistle blasts.
Don't
- Don't keep walking "to see if you recognize something."
- Don't climb down what you can't climb back up.
- Don't wait in dry washes or under dead trees.
- Don't walk at night.
Have ready
- Written plan with someone: trail, return time, when to call 911.
- Water, headlamp, whistle, rain cape, extra battery.
- Map of the area downloaded for offline use.
- Fixed return time, before sunset.
Key factIf you truly must move, leave a note and an arrow with direction and time. Never cross a swollen river.
